21 days of earthquakes in eastern turkey is another video of the earthquake series… a time lapse showing all 2.5+ (magnitude) earthquakes from 21/10/2011 to 11/11/2011.

What you see is a screencapture of a program that I wrote using Data Feeds from the U.S. Geological Survey.

LikeButton refers to the concept introduced by Facebook to express one’s affirmation in pressing digital Like buttons. The possibility to hit “Like” is available within the social network platform referring to actions taken, statements said and media uploaded, as well as integrated into external websites and services that have a page on Facebook. Facebook itself calls the Like button their most important “Social Plugin” , enabling users to share a page (or almost any other content) with their friends, expressing that they “liked” it. For widespread general use, Facebook provides a plugin for your side, generating your personal Like button code. Besides the importance within the peer group to see who actually liked what, the amount of “Likes” a page gets (be it a person or service or anything else) is a strong indication of general interest, acceptance and affirmation. The public display of the total number is therefore an essential part of the service. Facebook addresses this in including the number of people who liked a site within the automatically generated digital badge – thus becoming visible for anybody else who happens to visit the site.

Our main interest lies in actually giving the Like statement a physical presence. This includes displaying the important information of how many people liked something to the user, as well as providing an adequate interface. The result is a wearable badge freely attachable to any objects or clothes. The visual appearance is based on the design suggested by Facebook; expressing Like includes pressing a button, resulting in an immediate update of the total number of “people who like this”, visible on place and online on their Facebook wall.

Leds2Go

Leds2go is a research project by Susanne Seitinger and the Austrian Institute of Technology to develop a dynamic guiding system for subway stations. For a case study LED lights have been set up at the subway station Schottenring in Vienna to visualize in 4 different running lights how many seconds to go until the next train arrives. Together with Markus Murschitz Jona developed a custom made software to control the LED panels and to connect the running lights to the schedule of the Wiener Linien subway network.

Stille Post 2.0 is a multimedia installation in public space, which is dealing with privacy, surveillance and social media. Following the system of the well-known children’s game Chinese Whispers a machine listens to talks, processes the information and passes it on to the next link of the chain or as the last link makes the information public and confronts the source with the output.

Jona Hoier and Ulrich A. Reiterer continuously observe the noise and conversation fragments from
passers-by of a shopping window. In real time - according to the principle of ”mechanical turks” – these sounds are being interpreted and published in the virtual public space – on the online platform Twitter. The observed Passer-by is confronted with the output in the next shopping window – tweets presented on a Public display screen.

7 days of earthquakes in japan

Recently I have been in continuous contact with my friends in Japan, who are all living in Tokyo. Fortunately, they are all fine. The big Sendai earthquake and the following tsunami did not harm them directly. But – besides the nuclear danger – there are many aftershocks happening all the time. A friend told me that Tokyo feels like pudding, another one told me on saturday that the earth is shaking every 30 minutes, and earthquakes are regularly occurring in the middle of skype conversations. For me, and especially for my friends in Japan this is a tremendous psychological challenge – even if those earthquakes are not as strong as the big one. But you never know…

Well, yesterday night this led me to the idea of trying to visualize that feeling – a timelapse of 5+ earthquakes from the past 7 days. What you see is a screencapture of a program that I wrote overnight. Thanks to the XML feed of the US Geological Survey, the program is running live and updates automatically.

White Shadow

White Shadow is a telematic sundial connecting people from Mexico City and Linz through their shadows. Linz and Mexico City are physically 8 hours apart. At any given time people in these two cities are experiencing opposite phases of the day and night cycle. As nighttime falls in Linz, its shadows fade out and the shadows in Mexico City grow longer. It is during these hours that the shadows of a monument (appearing in white) and passer-by migrate from Mexico City to the Hauptplatz in Linz. It mimics the original shadow in size and shape, emulating a sundial. This white shadow provides the backdrop for projecting the silhouettes of passers-by in Mexico. As people in Linz step into the white shadow, their own shadows will also fall on it and meet the ones from Mexico.

It can open up totally new perspectives into the current discussions related to the art piece – and you can leave your comment as well!”

TweetCaption is a small screen integrated into the museum signage system, which displays live Twitter messages filtered according to the exhibit: showing ongoing global discussions about the art piece, the artist, or contextual relevant information.

TweetCaption allows visitors to draw parallels between the exhibition pieces and underlying discussions of the context the piece is dealing with. While traditional captions provide curated and authoritative explanation and interpretation for museum pieces, TweetCaption opens up the possibility to set exhibits in an on-going context of public understanding, connotations and current developments in filtering and displaying relevant Tweets from the Social Media tool Twitter.com.

Consisting of an iPod Touch running custom made software, TweetCaption can easily be integrated into existing signage infrastructures. TweetCaption allows visitors a new form of interaction and participation in the museum with the exhibits they are looking at: they can scroll through thematically related Tweets and messages left by earlier visitors, as well as leave a message themselves.

Also for museum professionals TweetCaption can provide an interesting perspective: as visitors sending their contribution to TweetCaption use a specific hashtag/code, museum authorities can have a focused look at their visitor’s reactions. Using a hashtag specific to the museum as well as the objects, in sending a message user simultaneously inform their Twitter friends about the museum visit and their opinion.
